Cartagena supports diabetics in the world day of the disease (14/11/2018)

On World Diabetes Day, celebrated this Wednesday, November 14, the Diabetes Society of Cartagena and District, SODICAR has proceeded to read a manifesto at the door of the Regional Assembly, with essential claims to raise awareness and give visibility to the disease .

The act has been wrapped by members of the Municipal Corporation of the City of Cartagena, as the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes Garcia, and the mayors Antonio Calderón, Manuel Padín and Ana Rama;

as well as members of all the political groups with representation in the Regional Assembly, whose president, Rosa Peñalver, has been in charge of welcoming the concentrates, as well as showing institutional support for this disease.

For its part, the president of SODICAR, María Dolores García, wanted to apologize to the attendees for the postponement of the VIII solidarity March united by diabetes, scheduled for today and suspended before the 80 percent forecast of rain.

Garcia has announced that it is postponed to Wednesday, November 21, "if time permits."

This year's World Diabetes Day has as its motto 'Families and Diabetes', "the campaign's main objective is to promote the role of the family in management, care, prevention, and education," said Garcia.

Who also has emphasized that the proportions of diabetes are already epidemic.

The president of SODICAR has contributed data from the International Diabetes Federation on those affected by this disease in which there are: 382 million people worldwide, with 6 million people in Spain, -nearly 14 percent of the population-, of which more than 200,000 are from Murcia and 30,000 of them are affected in Cartagena, of whom 13,000 are unaware of having diabetes.

Garcia has warned that diabetes without good long-term control causes damage to organs such as the heart, kidneys or eyes, "diabetes does not appear in any death certificate, but in 2017 diabetes caused 4 million deaths, every 6 seconds someone dies of diabetes ".

On this occasion, SODICAR has emphasized the following essential claims:

Education and training, which are crucial for people with diabetes.

Only 50 percent of people with this disease have attended training sessions.

New focus on the patient health relationship, with attention to individual needs, with personalized treatment and new forms of communication, with on-line tools.

Have quality material and services for patients

Continuous training of professionals, so that they are always at the forefront in knowledge, therapies and new technologies.

Prevention campaigns, through a healthy diet that prevents obesity and overweight, as well as an early diagnosis,

Normalization and non-discrimination for the Administration to solve the situation of diabetic children in schools so that they feel equal and not discriminated against.

Health equity between all the Autonomous Communities and that the patient associations take part in the decision making together with the Administration.

Non-discrimination in the workplace, change in regulations to end the difficulties in accessing public employment.

Support for research for type 1 diabetes.
