The Mandarache and Hache 2019 Prizes are started with the graphic novel and the comic as protagonists (07/11/2018)

With the motto 'Make it epic' and the poster of the illustrator Salvador Roldán Jiménez, the councilor of the Area of Culture and Youth, David Martínez, has presented this Wednesday, November 7, the details of the new edition of the Mandarache and Hache Awards, whose Reading committee registration period opens until December 21st.

Along with him, the members of the Project Promoter Group, Carmen Izquierdo and Ignacio García, have appeared before the media, who have highlighted the authors and books chosen for this edition of the Mandarache and Hache Awards, and the project coordinator, Alberto Soler.

The fourteenth edition of this successful reading education project, promoted by the City of Cartagena since 2004 and which is aimed primarily at young people from the municipality of Cartagena between 15 and 30 years (Mandarache Award) and 12 and 14 years (Hache Award) , is loaded with originality because this year the Mandarache category will be starred exceptionally by the graphic novel and comics, as announced by the organization at the awards ceremony in May 2018.

Thus, as specified by the mayor of Youth, David Martinez, with Mandarache focused on the graphic novel and Hache in youth literature, the project will again offer the nearly 6,000 young participants the opportunity to read the finalist works and meet its authors in meetings scheduled throughout the year in the educational centers of Cartagena.

As every year, they will also be responsible for voting the winning works, becoming one of the largest literary juries in the world.

The Mandarache Project is promoted by the Youth Council in collaboration with the Municipal Libraries and the participation of twenty secondary schools, three universities and the Intercultural Centers of Social Services, as well as other entities such as the Popular University, the University of Elderly the UPCT and several literary gatherings in the city.

In addition to the centers and entities of Cartagena, the invited institute of another municipality will be the IES Juan Carlos I of Murcia, thirty students will be able to read the books of the Mandarache Prize, meet the finalist authors and vote the winner together with the students of the centers of teaching of Cartagena, as well as participating in all the activities of this edition.

THE FINALISTS

The selection of works and authors, as explained by the promoters of the project, Carmen Izquierdo and Ignacio García, as in previous editions, has tried to combine different books that can cover the expectations of different types of readers and offer a balanced representation of the more interesting and representative of our current narrative.

Thus, after two years of lectures and training workshops in which they have been able to deepen the genre, the members of the Promoter Group have selected three graphic novels as finalist works of what will be the fourteenth edition of the Mandarache Prize: The Grooves of Chance by Paco Roca (Astiberri, 2013), one of the most important comic authors of our country;

Lamia by Rayco Pulido (Astiberri, 2016), who was National Comic Award in 2017;

and Your future begins here (Nube de Tinta, 2017) by the illustrator Mikko and the writer Isaac Rosa, who returns to the Mandarache Prize after being a finalist in 2012 with his novel El país del miedo.

For its part, the Hache 2019 Award will be decided between three novels of juvenile literature of varied styles and themes, selected for their pedagogical value and artistic quality: the novel with fantastic tints Las lágrimas de Naraguyá (SM, 2017), by Catalina González Vilar (Alicante, 1976);

the novel of science fiction, intrigue and mystery The Gorki command (Edebé, 2016), by Fernando Lalana (Zaragoza, 1958), winner of the National Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature, among other outstanding prizes;

and novel of learning and adventures The midnight girl, by Gisela Pou (Edebé, 2015).

GROWS ORANDS MANDARACHE

Mandarache shores, the line of internationalization of the project through which other cartagenas participate in it, increases this year the number of participants reaching 240 students, twice as many as in previous editions.

Through Orillas, those dozens of students from Cartagena de Indias in Colombia and Cartagena in Chile will read and vote for the Mandarache 2019 Prize books with thousands of Cartagena readers in Spain.

This increase has been possible thanks to the agreement signed with the General Directorate of Book and Reading Promotion of the Ministry of Culture, which increases from 12,000 to 18,000 euros, and the incorporation into the project of two important partners, the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for el Desarrollo (AECID) and Acción Cultural Española (AC / E), which will collaborate in this gradual internationalization of the Mandarache Project in order to position it as an effective Ibero-American model of reading education.
