An investigation on the residential exclusion in Cartagena will be able to guide the administrations in their social policies (29/10/2018)

A study on the profile and social situation of residential exclusion in Cartagena concludes that the profile with the greatest social disadvantages is related to the female sex and Spanish nationality and to the man of foreign nationality, taking into account variables such as housing, education, work, income , health, social-family relations, health and participation,

This text, prepared by the Observatory of Social Exclusion of the University of Murcia, the Network of Fight against Poverty and Social Exclusion of the Region of Murcia, and the City of Cartagena, concludes that "sex, combined with nationality , determines different levels of social risk, since while for the natives being a woman is an additional risk factor, for foreigners it is being a man ".

The presentation of the study, which is part of a doctoral thesis, took place this Monday, October 29, in the hands of the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García;

as well as the director of the Observatory of Social Exclusion of the University of Murcia, Manuel Hernández;

and Diego Cruzado, representing the Network to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion in the Region of Murcia.

It also states that the aspects that represent the most difficulties accumulated among the interviewees are income and work, since around 70% have monthly incomes lower than 400 euros or are unemployed, which means a situation of social exclusion.

The councilor highlighted the work of the institutions that have participated in the preparation of this study, which will help in the fight against social exclusion from the local administration, which thanks to this document can continue to seek solutions and taking measures to alleviate social exclusion and prevent it from continuing to develop.

Mercedes García has indicated that of all the aspects to be valued within social exclusion, the most important is housing;

the lack of it or the existence of an inadequate for the development of individuals.

Therefore, from the City of Cartagena, through the Department of Social Services, has given priority to the issue of housing through the housing service and care for homeless people, which are apartments with their own identity, independent and separated that enjoy differentiated and increasing efforts and budgets.

THE STUDY

On the other hand, the research concludes that in the dimension of socio-family relations there are also great difficulties among the respondents, given that 45.5% declare that they do not have the support of friends or relatives.

Regarding the educational field, 30.3% affirm that they have no studies.

However, in the field of health and participation, serious solutions are less frequent, since only 17% would be excluded due to serious illness or addiction.

The study can be an important source of primary information to consider in the orientation and planning of social policies: not only in housing, but in other areas of social intervention such as income, employment, training or health, the study authors point out.

Finally, they have indicated that it is planned to recount the survey in November 2018 to know the evolution of the social profile and the situation of residential exclusion in Cartagena.
