We can denounce that the socialist government bought the contaminated lands of Hondón without thinking about the economic repercussions (26/10/2018)

In the Air Quality Committee convened by the Municipal Government, today, Friday, October 26, in a monographic session of the contaminated lands of Hondón, CTSSP-Podemos, has raised questions about the decontamination project and its economic repercussions, as well as who was going to take them, and the mayor Ana Belén Castejón has admitted not knowing the cost, or who finally was going to take them from the City Council.

After knowing the last report where the CSN (Nuclear Safety Council), where listed the Hondon land, as one of the 6 places with radioactive materials in the country, from Podemos the Municipal Government was required to urgently call the "Mesa de Quality of the Air ", where neighbors and neighbors will be invited, in this case the newly created platform where the neighborhoods most affected by the contamination of the Hondon land are located, such as La Estación, Torreciega, Los Mateos, and San Ginés, to explain what were the intentions of the Municipal Government in terms of decontaminating the land and how it would affect the cost of such decontamination to the municipal coffers.

The first thing that they denounce from the purple formation, is that none of the affected neighborhoods has been invited to the "Air Quality Bureau", reason why it has been insisted on the importance of the presence of the affected neighbors to that they know firsthand the efforts undertaken by the City Council, and so that they can participate actively in the resolution of the problem.

We can demand from the Socialist Government transparency and neighborhood participation in all municipal management, but much more in what affects the health of the people.

The municipal group of Podemos has asked several questions to the new councilor for the Environment, Manuel Mora.

The first has been directed to know whether since 2001, the year that Ercros ends its industrial activity in the Hondón, until now, some municipal government, had demanded the decontamination of the land to Ercros, to enforce the principle of that "the polluter pays," and the response has been "that there is no record." That means that for 15 years the PP, and another 3 years with MC and the PSOE in the mayor's office, none had demanded the polluting company to decontaminate .

This is the basis of the complaint that Podemos is going to raise to the Office of the Prosecutor, the responsibility of the local administration, that is to say, of the City of Cartagena, by not requiring either the contaminating company or the Autonomous Community to undertake the work decontamination of highly contaminated land, which could affect the health of the residents of Cartagena.

Nobody has done or demanded anything for 18 years, and from Podemos they want to know to whom this responsibility corresponded, whether to the City Council or the Autonomous Community, because if things had been done right from the start we would not find ourselves in this current situation .

On the other hand, Podemos has asked the mayor directly, what his intentions were when buying land from Hondón to Solvia for half a million euros, knowing that they were contaminated, and the answer he has given them, has been that "it was from the least contaminated part, and that besides the price of the square meter was a bargain ".

According to Podemos for Ana Belén Castejón, the price of the underground meter prevailed, before assessing how much it would cost to the municipal coffers this "so cheap" land, which is a true recklessness, especially when the mayor affirms that do not know if the cost will be assumed by the City Council or any other administration, it seems that the Autonomous Community.

To the question that CTSSP asks the Councilor for the Environment about the affectation of groundwater by the material contaminated by heavy and radioactive metals, the answer is that at the moment, due to the reports and studies that have been carried out through Over the years, there is no significant contamination of groundwater, but even so, the entire decontamination project must undergo an Environmental Impact procedure, which would also include the status of groundwater.

For Podemos, this situation would make the decontamination project much more expensive since it would be more costly to have to treat the land on the surface and in the subsoil.

But all this was not taken into account at the time of acquiring the land, which continues adding to the enormous irresponsibility on the part of the Municipal Government, which only contemplated the cheap price of the land without looking at the economic repercussions of the decontamination, to give it later a mainly urbanistic use.

As for the fencing required by both the CSN, and the Ombudsman, neither the City Council, nor representatives of the Autonomous Community present in the Air Quality Board, have been able to explain when it may be installed.

"For some or for others the house without sweeping, and in this case the contamination without removing from next to the population of Cartagena.

Those who pay the consequences of leaving the administrations for years are always the same, the neighbors, who see their health and environment worsen while politicians play hide-and-seek, or "I have not been" 2E But this time it will have to be the Prosecutor's Office that decides who is responsible and who must be required to pay with their shame, "says Pilar Marcos, Secretary General of Podemos in Cartagena, and spokesperson for the CTSSP Group.
