Experts bet on the UPCT to install sensors on the crops to optimize even more the irrigation water (17/10/2018)

Installing sensors in the crops in the Campo de Cartagena area would make it possible to further optimize the use of water in agriculture.

The monitoring of the amount of water available in the soil and in the plant at each moment of the life of the plant will improve in a significant percentage the results despite the technology already used by farmers in intensive crops.

This is one of the proposals addressed today by a dozen researchers and experts in the workshops on precision irrigation held at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

According to experts gathered at the conference, organized by the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture of the UPCT, a monitored system of controlled drip irrigation can save a lot of irrigation water and avoid, at the same time, the unwanted leaching of fertilizers, which could be dragged to the aquifers.

The vice-rector of Innovation and Enterprise of the UPCT, Alejandro Pérez Pastor, who has participated in the conference, has highlighted the importance of having companies created in the University to achieve a more sustainable agriculture.

As an example has cited the 'spin of' Widhoc of the UPCT, which already monitors the risk of 200 customers.

During the inauguration, the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, stressed that the Chair "has found very hopeful solutions" to optimize the use of water in agriculture.

In addition, it has manifested the importance of the "transversality" of the research being developed by the Cátedda in this regard, such as the use of sensors in cultivations or controlled irrigation through drones.

The Chair of Sustainable Agriculture, which is currently focused on the reduction of nitrates in irrigation water, is formed by the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam) and the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattle Ranchers (Coag), in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), with the Foundation of the Obra Social of La Caixa and with the participation of thirteen companies and agricultural cooperatives (Coagacart, Levante Sur, Fruveg, Gregal, Hortamira, La Pacheca-Spalm, Cooperative Society Cota 120, Agriculture and Exports, San Cayetano, Camposeven, Agriculture of the Southeast, Sun and Land Campo de Cartagena and Surinver), leaving the door open for other agricultural organizations and financial entities to join.

In the technical conference 'Management of precision irrigation for a sustainable agricultural use of Campo de Cartagena' have participated the UPCT researchers Rafael Domingo, Roque Torres, Fulgencio Soto, Alejandro Pérez and Juan José Martínez.
