Friday kicks off the international symposium on the porticos of the Roman theater (16/10/2018)

The Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena next to the University of Murcia organizes an International Symposium on the porticos of the Roman theater.

Previously an International Symposium on Roman Theater Architecture was held in Cartagena, focusing on the theoretical design of the scenic facades, Scaenae Frons, as well as its modulation, architectural evolution and the possible regional peculiarities.

On this occasion, the aim of the new International Symposium is to focus attention on a less studied space of Roman theaters such as the Porticus Post Scaenam.

If we look at the classical sources, these porticos serve a useful function both as protection for spectators in case of inclement weather, as for the preparations of the actors, going through an undoubted use as an area of expansion and recreation.

Along with these functions, the porticos are also an adequate space for the self-representation of local elites, and are often associated with those theaters where the intervention of the imperial family or of an elite is narrower, as is the case with Cartagena, Volterra or Mérida, which will be analyzed in the sessions of the congress, while in other theaters the space is reduced to a small porticoed gallery, in the case of Douga or Leptis Magna.

The presentations of the Symposium are intended to cover the various regions of the Empire, so that the main Roman theaters of Gaul and the Roman cities of North Africa, as well as the Italic theaters of Ostia, Venafro, Volterra, and Rome, will be analyzed. and the porticos of the Hispanic theaters of Cartago Nova, Augusta Emerita, Itálica, Guadix, Clunia and Olisipo.

It will also address a global vision on the restoration and enhancement of these spaces in the different provinces of the Empire, which will serve as a framework for discussion for the future proposal of the porch of the Roman theater in Cartagena.

The meeting has been registered as a research activity in the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The official opening of the course will be on the 19th at 9.00, with the assistance of the Councilor for Culture of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez Noguera.

The inaugural lecture by Professor Pierre Gros on the porticos after the scene and its evolution will be held next.

In the following sessions the theaters of Italy and Hispania will be analyzed, among them that of Carthago Nova, on the 20th it will focus on the arcades of the theaters of North Africa and Gaul.

The closing session with an advance of the conclusions will be on the 20th at 13.45, moderated by Professor José María Luzón, and in the afternoon the Roman theater and the forum district will be visited.

In the Cartagena International Symposium, more than 17 European research centers participate, both universities and research centers such as the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris, the Università di Roma La Sapienza, the Research Institute of Ancient Architecture in Lyon , the University of Córdoba, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Universitat Rovira and Virgili de Tarragona, Polytechnic University of Valencia, University of Burgos, University of Valladolid, Mérida Institute of Archeology, Mérida Consortium, Guadix City Council.
