The City Council will fence the land of El Hondón as soon as it has the permission of the General Directorate of the Environment (04/10/2018)

The Nuclear Safety Council has declared on numerous occasions that the El Hondón land is contaminated by radiation.

Although it is true, it is the first time that it manifests the need to include them in an official catalog of contaminated soils.

"The fact of having this official catalog of contaminated soils is going to be an opportunity that can allow the City Council to request aid that leads to its final restoration," said the mayor.

On February 10, 2017, the Nuclear Safety Council sent to the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment of the Region of Murcia, a record of the meeting held on November 15, 2016, in which the situation was addressed of the land rehabilitation project for the El Hondón plot.

Representatives of the Ministry and the Nuclear Safety Council participated in this meeting.

"As stated in the minutes of this meeting, the members of the Nuclear Safety Council, and said that in the absence of a more detailed analysis, the land does not pose a significant radiological risk to the population, so there is no reason for alarm Social.

The Nuclear Safety Council has not said anything new that was not known for years, "said Ana Belén Castejón.

In addition, the CSN considers that fencing of the area could be sufficient to ensure the restriction of the uses of the plot and thus avoid frequent presence at the site.

In view of this situation, on March 22, 2017, the General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Assessment requested the owners of the land of El Hondón (PODECASA, Solvia Development, SL and Ercros, SA) to fence them.

In March 2018, the City Council drafted the preliminary draft of the enclosure and fence of El Hondón, sending it to Solvia to execute the fence.

Also, the preliminary draft is sent on April 3, 2018 to the General Directorate of Environment and other affected agencies such as ADIF, Directorate General of Roads, Directorate General of Cultural Assets, Commonwealth of the Taibilla Channels, and the Hydrographic Confederation of the Safe, requesting that they inform about it.

This notification was not answered by the General Directorate for the Environment.

Later, when land ownership changes, moving from Solvia to City Hall, the consistory rewrites a report prepared with fenced enclosure proposal, since it already owns the land.

In addition, it has again requested reports from all the affected organizations, specifically on September 20, 2018, without any response being received so far.

"As soon as these reports are received, and with the considerations that the competent agencies indicate, the City will proceed to the fence as it has a budget to execute it in this same year," concluded Castejón.

The team of Dr. Ángel Faz Cano, researcher in charge of the Research Group of management, use and recovery of soil and water, of the UPCT, finalizes the project of soil restoration of the sector

While these authorizations are not received, the City Council has carried out urgent measures, among which is the arrangement and reinforcement of the main access door, and the installation of posters that warn of the existence of hazardous waste in places where they can access pedestrians

On the other hand, the City Council expects to have the project of soil restoration of the sector, prepared by experts of the UPCT, which raises treatment options in situ, throughout the month of November.
