We are Region: 18 years after the closing of Potasas, Cartagena continues to live with radioactivity (04/10/2018)

Ana Belén Nicolás: "From Somos Región, we will be very aware of the decisions that the administrations take on the matter.

Here you can only clean and decontaminate the area "

After almost two decades since the closure of the Potasas y Derivados plant, at the entrance to the city from the Murcia motorway, the residents of Cartagena continue to live with soils contaminated by radioactivity in amounts that may exceed the limit recommended in up to 22 times.

Yesterday, finally and officially, the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), recognized that the land of Hondón, where this factory was located and where there are still deposits with sludge of phosphates and heavy metals, is one of the six points in Spain contaminated by radiation due to the presence of Uranium-238.

Since 2001, the Potasas y Derivados factory ceased its activity in the area, residents of Cartagena have been demanding the cleaning and decontamination of these lands.

18 years later, the situation is at the same point.

Neither the City of Cartagena, majority owner of these lands, nor the Regional Government have attended the neighborhood claims.

Now, after being exposed by almost two decades of inaction, the Regional Government announces that it will declare the Hondón area contaminated.

For Ana Belén Nicolás, coordinator of Somos Región in Cartagena, "this decision is clearly insufficient.

We Cartagena since 1954, bearing the consequences of an industrial activity that has flooded our air with radiation.

And since the closure of this company in 2001, claiming something that seems logical for everyone except the authorities.

Hopefully these ads serve something and definitely proceed to clean the area.

You have to listen to the neighbors and attend to their demands, especially when they have to do with such sensitive matters that affect us all.

Last May, Somos Región met with the neighbors of the station sector listening to their demands and concerns.

We will be very aware of the decisions that the administrations take on the matter.

Here you can only clean and decontaminate. "
