Cartagena celebrates World Alzheimer's Day with the reading of a manifesto (21/09/2018)

This Friday, September 21, marks the World Alzheimer's Day and, for this reason, a manifesto has been read in the Reception Hall of the Palace Hall, which has outlined the important work of carers of these patients and the need for social and health awareness about the specific needs of Alzheimer's patients.

The manifesto was read by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and by the treasurer of the AFAL association of Cartagena and Comarca, Ignacio González, both of whom were accompanied by the mayor of the municipal corporation, Mercedes García;

of the edile of Education, Culture and Youth, David Martinez, as well as other members of the different political groups that make up the municipal corporation.

Thus, Castejón has emphasized that in Spain there are 4.8 million people over 60 "whose September 21 they live every day".

This figure accounts for 6.8 of the population, with Spain being the third country with the largest number of patients, second only to France and Italy.

Similarly, the mayor stressed that "we are aware of the needs that AFAL (Alzheimer's Association and other neurodegenerative dementias of Cartagena and Shire) has in Cartagena and we are working to offer a place that meets the conditions required for treatment of this disease, because together we make our fight. "

For its part, the treasurer of the AFA Association, Ignacio González, during the reading of the manifesto has highlighted that "from this association we have been working for more than 20 years in trying to mitigate the ravages of Alzheimer's in patients and caregivers and throughout These years we have treated more than 7,000 people, including patients and family members. "

The motto of this year's world day is "Alzheimer's Social Conciousness", since they claim the need for true social and health awareness of the specific needs of Alzheimer's patients, but also of the needs of their caregivers.

"Many of them are relatives, who dedicate each day with their 24 hours to the care and attention of their patients, with the emotional and physical exhaustion that implies.

In addition to the economic burdens and labor problems that entails, "said Gonzalez.
