Cartagena joins the comprehensive plan of Ecovidrio to increase the recycling of glass in summer (06/08/2018)

The City of Cartagena, through the Department of Infrastructures, this summer has joined the comprehensive plan that Ecovidrio has launched, with the aim of increasing the recycling of glass in the hotel establishments of coastal areas, with a campaign called 'Take note, recycle glass'.

Summer is a fundamental time to increase the recycling of glass containers.

The impact of tourism and the increase in population, as well as the increase in consumption in the hospitality sector, means that around 30% of glass packaging waste is recycled throughout the year.

In this sense, the mayor of Infrastructure, Juan Pedro Torralba, stressed that "with this action and those we have developed, not only this summer but throughout the year, Cartagena joins the most leading municipalities in terms of recycling and sustainability refers.

For us it is essential that our growth and development is closely linked to the protection of our environment, especially in the coastal area that requires greater involvement. "

The collaboration of the hospitality sector is key since it generates almost 50% of waste of single-use glass containers.

Through the initiative 'Take note, recycle glass', the non-profit organization that is responsible for recycling this waste promotes and facilitates the separation of glass containers among professionals in the sector, in addition to raising awareness about the importance of recycling to preserve the environment and fight against climate change.

'Take note, recycle glass': an initiative for sustainable hospitality

The campaign will reach more than 100 catering establishments in Cartagena.

With the aim of mobilizing the professionals of this sector, Ecovidrio will carry out more than 300 information and awareness visits during the summer period.

In addition, the entity will install new containers, and will deliver more than 50 buckets to facilitate the transport of glass packaging waste.

The establishments adhering to the initiative will compete during the summer and will be able to follow their position in the ranking through the web www.tomanotareciclavidrio.es.

The premises most committed to the recycling of glass containers and that reach higher score, will receive as a prize a master class with Quique Dacosta, recognized chef with three Michelin Stars.

To mobilize citizens, Ecovidrio has decorated containers with summer motifs.

In addition, the entity will grant municipalities that overcome the challenge of increasing the recycling of glass containers a recognition.

Glass recycling data in Cartagena

According to the latest data for 2017, the citizens of Cartagena recycled a total of 2,994,320 kilograms of glass, which means that each inhabitant recycles an average of 14.0 kg.

With respect to the containerization rate, Cartagena has an average of 204 inhabitants per container, currently with a total of 1,050 igloos for glass packaging waste installed.
