A project of urban sustainability of the UPCT, selected worldwide to compete in China (04/07/2018)

The students of the Polytechnic of Cartagena participate in a global challenge of Santander and Tsinghua University in Beijing with teams from eight countries

Through a mobile application, drivers, pedestrians, cyclists or runners will be able to know in real time the level of contamination of the streets and avenues of the city to choose more 'clean' routes.

The project designed by four students of the Degree in Electronics from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) will be presented at the beginning of August at Tsinghua University in Beijing as part of an international innovation competition organized by the Santander X university entrepreneurship community.

Polytechnic students have developed a device that uses different IoT (Internet of Things) networks such as LoRa or SigFox, with the ability to send information over long distances with low energy consumption.

"Using solar energy we could feed the nodes, which will communicate with the central server," explains Miguel Ángel Navarro, "to know practically in real time the level of pollution in localized areas of the city."

"The users of the public road would get the information through driving or sports applications, with the option of rewarding points or discounts to owners of vehicles that opt for roads not overloaded with pollution," adds the student of the UPCT.

"The objective is that pollution does not affect especially certain areas of the city and avoid areas with large concentrations," the students say, who have made a video in which they show how the system would work in the city of Murcia.

The students of the UPCT, who have carried out the project independently, have been selected, out of 67 proposals, along with ten other teams from Brazil, Mexico, India, China, Portugal, Finland and Denmark.

The competition will include a two-week training period in entrepreneurship and innovation focused on urban sustainability at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, considered the best in the world in engineering and computer science.

Miguel Ángel Navarro will be accompanied by his brother Daniel Navarro and his colleagues Mario Navarro and Rafael Ruiz, already graduated in Electrical and Automatic Engineering from the UPCT.

Two of them have complemented their academic training by participating in the UPCT Makers student association and in Makers of Murcia.

There is also the fact that Miguel Ángel has already traveled to China, a grant from Huawei, thanks to his innovations in 3D printing.
