The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has shown her surprise at the decision of the Government of the Autonomous Community to modify the layout approved in the Regional Assembly for the Eurovelo 8 cycling route, eliminating its passage along the coast of Cartagena and all over the Sea Less.

"We find it incomprehensible that a route that goes from Cádiz to Athens crossing the Mediterranean regions by the coast, deviate upon arrival in this Autonomous Community, only and exclusively, by the desire of the regional government to cross the city of Murcia, although that supposes that this European route completely loses the spirit for which it has been designed ", criticized Castejón.

In addition to Cartagena, the Community has left out of this European infrastructure all the municipalities of the Mar Menor, ignoring the numerous petitions and proposals from neighbors, merchants and municipalities to put in place effective measures aimed at the deseasonalization of the area.

The mayor considers a "tremendous nonsense" to leave out of the cycle route to Cartagena and remember that the route also passes through Andalusia and does not deviate to Seville despite being the capital.

"It is not a technical decision but a political one.

There is more to see the map to realize that practically the only stage in which the route deviates from the coast is the one that crosses this Autonomous Community, "he said.

Eurovelo routes are an initiative of the Federation of European Cyclists, with the aim of connecting the entire continent with itineraries suitable for long-distance cyclists and also for regular users of the bicycle, in fact it was the association Murcia en Bici the first to denounce that the route deviated from the Mediterranean coast.

"That is why we do not understand how the Institute of Tourism has decided the new route without taking into account the opinion of the groups of cyclists, even from the city of Murcia, who have raised the alarm when considering that the route along the coast is the natural line of EuroVelo 8 and that has not respected the limit of 6% of unevenness, "said the first mayor.
