The Municipal Program "An Open School to Other Cultures" reaches more than 3,000 students (05/06/2018)

On Monday, June 4, the social action entities and Councilors of the City of Cartagena involved in the program "An Open School to Other Cultures" held a session evaluation of the 2017/18 course, which has reached 12 schools and more than 3,000 students of the municipality.

"A School Open to Other Cultures" is a program promoted by the Department of Education and the Department of Social Services of the City of Cartagena, with the aim of contributing to the development of an intercultural awareness in educational communities, promoting, for this, the knowledge of different cultures, respect for diversity and enrichment through intercultural dialogue.

This initiative is aimed at the schools of Primary and Secondary Education of the municipality, in which it is proposed the realization of teaching units developed by social action entities with experience in the field: Murcia Acoge, Columbares, Alraso, Cepaim, Accem , Rascasa, Bahai Community and the Intercultural Centers of the Immigration and Development Cooperation Unit of the City of Cartagena.

This course has worked with 12 educational centers, 6 of Primary Education and 6 of Secondary Education: CEIP San Cristóbal, CEIP Miguel de Cervantes, CEIP Patronato Sacred Heart of Jesus, CEIP Cuatro Santos, CEIP Vicente Medina, CEIP Virginia Pérez, IES Mediterranean , IES Carthago Espartaria, IES El Bohio, IES Isaac Peral, IES San Isidoro and IES Jiménez de la Espada.

Reaching more than 3,000 students with more than 120 activities developed.

The purpose of the program is the incorporation of work in the field of intercultural and cultural diversity in the educational projects of the centers, for this, activities have been developed included in the 26 teaching units that this course has developed.

They deal with topics such as: coexistence, interculturality, cultural diversity, rumorology, school bullying, universal declaration of human rights, promotion of equal treatment and non-discrimination, movements and causes of migration processes, stereotypes and prejudices, inequalities south, sustainable development and volunteering objectives.

The activities have been developed throughout the school year 2017/18, and in this month of June the work done by both the councils and promoters of the program, as well as by the participating educational centers, is being evaluated and evaluated. purpose of continuing the next course with the program based on the experience and evaluation carried out.

The Intercultural Education Program "An Open School to Other Cultures", was a pioneer program in this matter, since it was born in the year 1992, coinciding with the increase of foreign population in the city, and therefore in the educational centers of Cartagena

It emerged as a tool made available to the educational community to address cultural diversity in the classroom.

It is a clear example of the commitment of the City of Cartagena for the construction of a more plural, respectful and diverse society, from the coordinated work and network of different agents and entities involved in this matter.
