Citizens claim the Sustainability Report to the City Council to win in social justice and transparency (20/05/2018)

- The orange training will also propose that the Government put in place a Corporate Social Responsibility Plan in municipal companies, and that it be the main promoter of Corporate Social Responsibility in private companies, rewarding in the bidding documents of their competitions those candidate companies who have established CSR procedures "

- "We want Cartagena to lead this transformation in the region towards a responsible management of public resources," said the local spokesperson for Cs.

It does nothing more and nothing less than almost three years, in October 2015, the Municipal Group of Citizens in Cartagena defended in the House a motion calling for the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the development of the so-called 'Memory of Sustainability '.

The motion, which was presented by the Councilor of Cs, Alfredo Nieto, was approved unanimously.

Two years later, in October 2017, the councilor and spokesperson of Ciudadanos, Manuel Padín, asked what reasons the local government had for not having yet drawn up the mandatory Sustainability Report.

The Councilor for the Interior, Francisco Aznar, admitted the evident failure of the local government, and publicly undertook to prepare a CSR report in 2018. Because no municipal source has even mentioned the intention to initiate the procedures to have the report, the Group of Citizens has announced that it will request explanations for this matter at the next regular plenary session.

The orange training will also propose that the Government launch a Corporate Social Responsibility Plan (CSR) in the municipal companies, and that it rewards the implementation of these procedures in private companies, "the city council is the great contracting party of a municipality, and for this reason, it can promote CSR among the entrepreneurial fabric of Cartagena, be the great promoter of Corporate Social Responsibility in private companies, including in the specifications of its competitions the requirement that candidates have established CSR procedures. "

Cs recalled that the Chair of CSR of the UM, whose agreement was renewed last week, published the results of the first phase of the analysis of the level of corporate social responsibility in the municipalities of Murcia, Lorca, Molina de Segura and Cartagena.

The conclusions revealed that environmental policies and sustainable tourism actions in the City of Cartagena were "deficient".

The researchers also lamented that Cartagena did not yet have a Corporate Social Responsibility Report.

According to the orange training, this document will make it possible to determine the influence of the actions of the City Council in the economic, social and environmental spheres of the municipality and will proceed to monitor them, comparing them over time to observe their evolution.

Likewise, the aspects of the policies that are most valued by citizens according to their social impact will be analyzed.

Likewise, the fulfillment of the objectives of the institutional activity that is developed will be evaluated and, in this way, its true effectiveness will be known.

The spokesman of Cartagena Citizens explained that "when we talk about corporate social responsibility applied to a public institution, we talk about creating wealth in the most efficient way possible, prioritize job creation, respect the environment avoiding any pollution , or to respect human rights in decent working conditions. "

For the councilman, "if the government executes our proposal once, we would encourage many other municipalities of this Community to join this initiative, we want Cartagena to lead this transformation towards responsible management of public resources."

In Spain there are 8,116 municipalities.

Of these, only half a hundred have prepared their "Sustainability Report".

In our Region, no municipality has implemented the CSR, "we think that Cartagena should lead the Corporate Social Responsibility in the local area being the first to implement it in the Region of Murcia," said Padin who believes that "this City Council will not have legitimacy to to request companies to carry out CSR actions if they themselves do not implement them in their daily management ".
