In three months, Cartagena has its Accessibility Plan (19/05/2010)

The Councillor for Infrastructure, José Vicente Albaladejo, today introduced the Comprehensive Plan of the municipality of Cartagena Accessibility drafted by the study of the architect Fernando Montes Garcia Ochoa, winner of the contest held for that purpose and that in three months, give us the results of study on the situation of the municipality, mainly urban, from the standpoint of accessibility, its architectural barriers and the actions needed to improve.

The preparation of this document, which was awarded last February, arises from the cooperation agreement signed in May 2008 between the city of Cartagena, IMSERSO and the ONCE Foundation, amounting to 125,000 euros, and contains an explanatory the policy level, an action plan and a plan for accessibility through sensory communication (tactile and auditory signaling, pavement texture, etc.) synthesis or basic outline of the plan and proposed improvements, as well as budget estimates.

The study will not only affect municipal buildings but extend to public places and transport, pavements and street furniture evaluating and developing a guide to road type.

In this sense, the task of preparing the Plan has highlighted the fact chelae improvements benefit not only the disabled, all citizens are beneficiaries to the extent that the increased accessibility improves our quality of life.

According to Fernando Ochoa García Montes, whose work is supported by the launch of over a hundred such schemes throughout Spain, the city of Cartagena is located within the national average in terms of accessibility, taking into account that in general, the Spanish cities are very accessible entrance, with urban areas with narrow streets, winding and steep, but they fit in with this type of study.

So the goal is to improve the accessibility planning a future without architectural barriers in the works to be undertaken and, in turn, adapt or remove existing barriers.

From the City work in this line for some time because we are sensitive to the elimination of barriers for people with reduced mobility, so for all works carried out in the city, we always try to have the views of these groups, and there are performances like the one that is taking place today at one of the pedestrian crossings from the Port, very accessible to wheelchairs, or walking five meters wide will be built in Luis Calandre , works been visiting this morning, said José Vicente Albaladejo.

For the preparation of this Accessibility Plan, the editor himself has created a website, www.planaccesibilidadcartagena.es to serve as point of contact with the municipal officers and for citizens to report anything they deem appropriate in connection with this subject.
