Would-be firefighters learn to act before collapsing buildings and gas leaks (13/05/2010)

The 18 aspiring firefighters who recently passed examinations, and now hold a period of training and practice, participated this morning in a mock gas unescape, with collapsed buildings and trapped victims under the rubble.

The exercise took place on the Security Park, attended among others by the Councillor for Citizen Security, Javier Herrero, Director General of Security, Carlos Nieto, and the fire chief, Francisco Gómez Avalos.

The exercise simulated a gas leak affecting several city buildings, causing the collapse of a building with serious human and material damage.

The rescue team in collapsed structures (BREC), Service of Fire Fighting and Rescue has gone into action aided by a canine unit and three teams of 061 Murcia Health Service, a field hospital.

During the test we have simulated the rescue of victims also partially buried in area, others trapped in different vehicles and under the rubble.

Practices have also made evacuation of an injured flying fox, extinguishing the fire of a gas leak in city and rescue a person drowning in a water tank.

All alleged victims have been transferred to the field hospital of 061, and transferred to the referral hospital, Santa María del Rosell.

As pointed out by the council of Public Safety, the simulation found that firefighters Cartagena and preparation have sufficient means to act in this type of disaster.
